I’ve had an opportunity to use the Phoenix Series BTS001 BeatRoute Bluetooth stereo speakers for several weeks now, and I think I’m ready to comment on it.

The speaker unit

I spoke a couple of times with Octave Systems’ (http://www.BeatRoute.com) president, Roy Worthington, and he was the epitome of the helpful support tech. Among other things, he informed me that the target audiences were music players such as the iPod, smartphones such as the iPhone, and portable computers like the iPad.

The unit consists of a speaker unit with integral Bluetooth transceiver and a microphone, an AC adapter, and a mini-phone plug (3.5mm) cable for hard-wired connections. It will also run on six AA batteries for that portability we’ve come to treasure in our tools and toys.

Designed to remotely control your player or phone, it has buttons to pause/resume play, next song/previous song, volume control, and a multi-function power button. Paired with your phone, it can also function as a speaker phone accessory, where the buttons take on new functions. The manual covers this in more detail.

If you have an audio device that uses the A2DP (Advanced Audio Distribution Profile) protocol and a phone that uses the HFP (Hands Free Profile) protocol, you can pair both of them at the same time. In that case, the speakers automatically mute the audio and go into speaker phone mode for incoming calls. (If the phone supports simultaneous use of both A2DP and HFP, it may not be possible to pair with two devices at the same time.)

Accessories

Pairing the speakers with a single Bluetooth is pretty straight forward: with the speakers off, press and hold the power button until the LED flashes red and blue. With your Bluetooth device within a one meter (three point three feet) range, set it to search for a device to pair with. Once the device finds the BTS001 speakers, send the speakers’ PIN, using the instructions of the device. Once paired, the speakers will automatically try to pair up with the last device they were paired with every time they are turned on.

Pairing the speakers with two devices is a bit more complicated: you must first pair with the audio player, then power the speakers off. Now turn off the audio player and repeat the process with the HFP device. Turn the player back on, it should pair once again with the speakers. When the speaker unit is turned on again, it will try to re-pair itself with both items. Pressing the power button and holding it to manually re-start the pairing process for the speaker unit will erase the old pairing information.

So, how does it sound? As usual, that’s dependent on the quality of the audio input. When I first paired it with my inexpensive phone, the quality was comparable to that of a portable AM radio and I was frankly underwhelmed. Later, I paired it with a friend’s iPhone, and the quality was better. Because the speakers are so close to each other, stereo separation is highly dependent on how far you are from the unit. I’d guess the stereo “sweet spot” is about two feet away.

Having access to a video projector that has an inadequate sound system, I plugged the speaker unit directly into my laptop and watched a video. The sound quality was acceptable, but don’t expect room-filling sound from a battery-powered unit.

My experience with the unit as a speaker phone was mixed. The sound quality on the speakers’ side was very good, of course. But the sound transmitted to the caller varied. One time, there was a buzzing like interference that made the voice unintelligible. Another time, it was reasonably clear, with that characteristic “hollow” sound of a speaker phone. I don’t know how dependent the clarity was on the location; it’s possible I was experiencing interference from the fluorescent lights.

Pros: if you want to share sound without passing around the ear buds or the headphones, this will work fine. The ability to automatically switch to a speaker phone while listening is a handy bonus, but the focus here is on using it as speakers, not a phone. It is highly portable, which cannot be said about most external sound systems you might plug your player into.

Cons: poor stereo separation and lower sound quality than I’d hope for with my music player. Perhaps I’m spoiled by hearing better, less portable systems? The 3.5mm cable also strikes me as fragile-looking. It says it can be used in your car, but there is no way of securing it to your dashboard.

I’d rate it at about 6.5 out of 10.

We just got back from a visit to Velocity Micro’s Richmond, Virginia headquarters where we were given full access to their new eBook reader the Cruz Reader. We’ve reported on this upcoming device before – but this time we had a lengthy hands-on experience with what promises to be the most capable full color Android eBook reader on the market. We’ve got the specs, we’ve got the photos and even a quick video!

Let’s get the official specs out of the way:

Full color TFT display

7” diagonal 800×600 screen

Android 2.0

256MB RAM, 256MB internal storage

Supports ePub, PDF, TXT, PDB, HTML reader files

MP3, WMA, AAC, WAV audio support

MPEG-4, H.264

JPEG, GIF, PNG, BMP image support

802.11 b/g wifi

Li-Ion battery – up to 10+ hours of life, 24+ standby

4GB Bundled SD card

Dimensions: 7.5″x 5.6″x .57″

Weight: a bit less than 1lb

Now we can add to these. First off, as to be expected, this isn’t the powerhouse of tablets because it’s a eBook reader first and foremost. That said, it’s far more powerful than similarly priced imports. It’s processor (brand not specified) is just 523mhz … but (unlike the some recent import tablets) it comes with GPU acceleration so the processor isn’t having to do all the work. The GPU handles the graphics and video so in operation this feels like a Motorola Droid, or perhaps a Droid Eris, in processing speed, while the graphics display remains smooth and quick. We did test internet connectivity over the Wifi and it was very quick. Unlike the imports.

Secondly the touchscreen is a resistance touchscreen. Others speculated that it would be capacitive but at this price point that wasn’t likely. That said, the screen is more responsive than other resistance touchscreens we’ve tried and since this is a eBook reader it’s more than up to the tasks required of it. There are also no buttons on the screen. The usual four Android buttons are moved to the status bar – but work very well there. The display itself is a 7″ diagonal TFT display in a 4:3 aspect ratio.

The battery life, in testing, performs well doing 6 hours of continuous video playback. Reading gives 10 hours, in standby the device will hold a charge for 36 hours! If that’s not enough – no problem. The battery is user-replaceable and behind the back panel which is easily removed. Pop out the SD card, pull out with your finger in that slot, and the panel pops right off.

In the unit we tested there was a hidden feature that we hope is in the production unit (no promises) … the Reader’s internal memory was on a user-changeable micro-SD card. So the Cruz Reader actually has an expandable internal AND an expandable external memory card!

Around the edges of the Reader you’ll find volume controls, power button, headset jack, power jack, mini-USB port and a pair of stereo speakers. The whole Reader fits nicely in one hand like a small hardback, or trade paperback, book and feels exactly right.

Its main goal has remained true over the years: world domination by replacing those old-fashioned wires. This of course would mean replacing every type cable imaginable, through which data is passed, including audio, using the Advanced Audio Distribution Profile (A2DP) as defined by the Bluetooth SIG. Using the very same A2DP profile, Wi-Gear has developed a sleek, ergonomically-designed set of wireless headphones for the IPod and Bluetooth enabled phones called the iMuffs. ‘iMuffs represent the massive convergence of two great technologies: the iPod and Bluetooth cell phone technology,’ said Mark Pundsack, Founder and CEO of Wi-Gear. ‘We saw an opportunity to fill a gap and put the two things together, for a product that provides fantastic sound quality and functionality without all of the hassle of wires.’
The iMuffs use the speedy Bluetooth 2.0 standard and the aforementioned AD2P profile and has a unique feature where when paired with a Bluetooth phone, the iMuffs will automatically pause the iPod and ring in the headphones, allowing the user to talk through the integrated microphone. Based on this we can also conclude that the Bluetooth Headset profile (HSP) also seems to be present in the iMuffs. The A2DP and HSP profiles also allow it to the used as a standard (but wireless) in a notebook or desktop environment and these acn be charged through any computer’s USB port, or with the included travel charger.
Wi-Gear has informed us that there will be one version of the iMuffs: the MB210, that comes both in black or white. Adding a silver version would be nice though! The unit will sell for $179.99 and includes the iMuffs iPod Adapter MA110 (Bluetooth adapter) which can be purchased separately for about $59.99. Another interesting observation is however that there’s no way of getting the the MB210 without the Bluetooth iPod Adapter. This is especially true for users that use their mobile phones as their main MP3-player, which in that case would make the included adapter unnecessary. All iMuffs products are available at www.wi-gear.com.

Orb Audio recently released home theater systems that fall firmly into the ‘lifestyle’ category in the sense that a stylish and especially compact design seem to be an important part of the formula. Staying true to the ‘Orb’ name these systems include spherical satellite speakers that are little bit bigger than a baseball. Due to the compact size of the satellites, measuring about 4 3/16 inches in diameter it should be ideal for those looking for good-sounding Home Theater speakers that should look right at home in any stylish home decor. At the heart of the Orb speaker systems are the spherical single driver Mod1 satellite speaker, all made from high carbon steel. According to Orb Audio these are handmade by metalwork artisans and hand-assembled in the company’s Sherman Oaks California production facility and are available in Metallic Black Gloss and Pearl White Gloss, both made with premium baked-on powder coatings. There’s also The Metallum Series, which basically is the same speaker but consists of three handmade metallic finishes: Hand-Polished Steel, Hand-Antiqued Copper and Hand-Antiqued Bronze. The Mod1 uses technologies like rare earth magnets, Santoprene, Nomex and CCAD voice coils to produce big, full sound from the smallest possible package, as Orb Audio indicated. ‘Using ultra-high quality parts, and using them conservatively, really allows us to push the limits of physics so that these little speakers have a lot of the characteristics of much bigger speakers,’ said Siegel. ‘My partner (co-founder and Chief Designer, Gary Pelled) really pulled the rabbit out of the hat on this one.’
Another unique feature of the Mod-speaker is that they’re well, modular, in the sense that Each Orb speaker in an audio system can actually be made from one, two or four individual Orbs (Mod1, Mod2 and Mod4.) Backing the speakers up is Orb’s line of Subwoofers, the 8′ 200 watt hybrid BASH amplified Super Eight or the 10′ Uber Ten with its 300 watt BASH hybrid amplifier.

‘We do things very differently than your typical consumer electronics company,’ said Pelled. ‘Almost every part that we can feasibly make in this country is made here. With most other companies, it’s all done overseas. With Orb, we are designing this stuff ourselves, putting it together ourselves, and supporting almost 100 artists and vendors in California and elsewhere in the U.S. When you export your production, not only do you lose quality control, but you lose the benefit of the discoveries and inventions that come with daily problem solving. On top of that, style and design are the first things to go in mass produced audio systems. By keeping it as local as possible, we can still pay attention to all of these things…we can use expertly finished steel instead of plastic or fake wood, for example. So, it’s not just about great sound, it’s also about how our speakers look in your room, and the level of attention we are able to pay to every speaker that goes out of our door. But we couldn’t do any of this, since it costs quite a bit more, if we did not have our direct business model cutting out the enormous markups that plague the audio industry. Our average customer saves over $1,000 in markups, and they receive a speaker system that is superior in many ways to the more expensive, mass produced systems. That is really the key to our success, and our speakers make us proud. We are so confident that people will love them, that we offer a 30-day home trial with a ‘no questions asked’ return policy. It is very easy to give Orb a try and people have embraced the idea from day one.’

We should soon be getting a sample of Orb Audio’s latest and greatest, consisting of their Super Eight or Uber Ten subwoofers with the Mod speakers. In the mean time be sure to check out Orb Audio’s website.

Altec Lansing recently introduced their Upgrader Headphone Series for use with MP3 players and multimedia phones, interestingly some models will work with the iPhone. The series will be offered with and without a microphone, three of the new Upgrader Series specifically the UHS 302, UHS 306 and UHS 307 will have microphones and a specialized ‘convertible’ adapter developed to connect with the iPhone as well as with most mobile phones. The Upgrader Series features both a UHS line (headphones with a microphone) and UHP line (headphones only) and according to Altec Lansing the materials used were inspired by specialized sporting goods and eyewear. The line itself seems quite extensive with the UHP 306, UHP 336, UHP 101 and UH 301 all with an in-ear designs with silicon tips or pads that conform to ears shape. There’s also the UHP 405 and UHP 805 with an over-the-ear design, but only the UHP 805 includes active noise-cancellation technology. For usage during active sports activities there’s the UHP 302, 303 and 307. All three were designed to provide t stability during sports activities while also allowing users to monitor external noises, such as traffic and workout partners. The UHS 307 has an inline volume control and microphone with mute switch.

Finally the UHS headphones come with a gold plated 1/4 inch (3.5mm), four-band connector that fits with the iPhone’s audio jack. Devices can be attached via the standard 1/4-inch (3.5mm) gold plated connector or a 1/8-inch (2.5mm) adapter that fits most audio component output ports.

Altec Lansing’s Upgrader Series will be available in August 2007 at major retailers and www.alteclansing.com.

In my previous NextFEST article I reported on socialight, a clever way to use your cell phone and communicate with others.

I just got a press release from the happy folks at Socialight that their site is ready for testing out.

This is their Press Release: Socialight is a community that lets you connect in new ways – by creating, sharing, and discovering virtual Sticky Notes placed at specific locations using your mobile phone or the web.Since our initial launch in the fall of 2005, thousands of people have used Socialight to tag thousands of locations and make personal connections centered on “geo-tagged” real-world places. Socialight lets both individuals and publishers post location-aware content that can be “pulled” via search or “pushed” as part of a spam-proof, opt-in channel exactly when and where it’s most relevant.

During the past few months, we’ve done a comprehensive overhaul that we’re quite excited about. Here’s a quick overview of some of the new features:

more ways to access Socialight while mobile – new mobile web (WAP) and text messaging (SMS) interfaces let you find and create Sticky Notes anytime, anywhere.

more ways to connect with other people – message users directly, post on users’ pages and invite contacts through easy address book importing.

enhance the networks and content you’ve already got by importing GeoRSS feeds from sites like Flickr to share content from specific places. If you have your own site like a blog or a MySpace page, you can also embed Socialight widgets right there.

tools for publishers (even you!) to create opt-in channels. WCities and Movie Locations Guide are already programming Socialight channels, with many more coming soon.
