Jabra BT530: Now hear this
   by  Jeff on 2008/12/29 3:20:07 (148)
Jabra BT530 Bluetooth EarphoneI am a big fan of hands free driving. That's why I drive with my knees. Since I still want to keep my hands free from holding anything else, I always use a bluetooth headset, too. My latest is the very cool, lightweight, smaller than most, Jabra BT530. This earphone has very effective background noise suppression they call Noise Blackout. This allows the person on the other end of the conversation to hear your conspiracy theories unimpeded by the murmurs in the holding cell. On your end, the Jabra BT530 intelligently adjusts the volume level of the call to be constant, regardless of whether the person on the other end lowers their voice to say something horrible about someone in the room, or suddenly shouts expletives at you. The sound is quite good on both sides of the conversation.

Going back to basics with the Palm Treo Pro
   by  Sydney on 2008/12/21 17:20:44 (476)
Way back in the beginning, there was a company called Palm. Palm had innovation, it was a catered to businesses, when mobile devices were only carried by businessmen. Expanding its reach from basic digital assistants that kept calendars and contacts on a simple operating system called the Palm OS, to a range of mobile devices that gave you access to anything at anytime and is now available in both Palm and Windows Mobile flavours.

This time around, Palm brings an unlocked Treo Pro to the table. The Treo Pro’s claim to fame is its ability to offer a ‘True end to end Enterprise Solution’. This review will cover the device from a non Enterprise perspective.

Casio EX-Z150: Picture this!
   by  Jeff on 2008/12/11 19:48:06 (449)

I admit that I am a digital camera snob. I always carry around 50 pounds of camera equipment; lenses, bodies (camera bodies, I keep the other ones in the basement) and accessories. Even my compact camera is the biggest and most expensive one I could find. Now I find myself holding the 8.1 megapixel wide zoom Casio EX-Z150, a point and shoot of distinction. This camera has CCD image stabilization. That's true IS (some cameras just increase the shutter speed). This camera does it all, and you don't have to know anything about taking a picture. While I'm fidgeting with the zillions of controls and parameters on my cameras, you're snapping away taking quite good pictures with your Casio EX-Z150. And you didn't miss the abominable snowman.

So what makes this point and shoot different from the others? First off is the wide zoom range. Ever had to keep stepping back to get everyone in the picture until falling over the wall into the ravine? Ever have the flying saucer overhead, but when you zoom in it still looks like a blurry pie plate hanging from a string? Both these problems are solved with the 28 to 112mm (35mm equiv.) 4x zoom range. So, after getting the clear picture of the UFO you say to yourself, “Nobody will believe me unless I can get this on YouTube.” Fortunately for you, the EX-Z150 has a direct to YouTube capture mode, which also captures all the screaming from all the bystanders as they are zapped and turned into zombies.

Nuance Dragon NaturallySpeaking: Take this down
   by  Jeff on 2008/12/10 16:12:48 (461)
Dragon NaturallySpeaking 10I don't know about you, but I've never really learned how to type all that well. Even though I find myself at the keyboard day after day and hour after hour, I'm still an advanced hunt and peck typist. I also don't know anybody willing to take dictation for me. But now I have Dragon NaturallySpeaking 10 from Nuance. I can just sit back in my chair and talk to my computer. Maybe I'll even dictate the next great American novel. But until then, I'll settle for dictating this review.

You can use NaturallySpeaking with virtually any Windows application. It comes with a spiffy high quality boom microphone headset. It has built-in commands which already know how to use Microsoft Outlook and Word, Google, among other applications. You may program your own shortcuts for your other applications. You can actually say “Search google for extraterrestrials” and it opens your browser and does it! You can send an e-mail to your friends simply by saying, “New e-mail”. You can fill in the addressee, subject, and body of the email, and send it, all without ever touching the keyboard. You can dictate into virtually any application that you would normally type into. You can even use it to IM. But that may defeat the purpose....

CRACKBERRY: True Tales of BlackBerry Use and Abuse
   by  Jeff on 2008/12/9 12:32:26 (272)
Our very own Gary Mazo and fellow collaborators Martin Trautschold and Kevin Michaluk have published a groundbreaking tome about the omnipresent, some say demonic, BlackBerry.  Only this time it is about the inner workings of the people who are addicted to its use.  This book uncovers the lighter and darker sides of those whose lives have been taken over by the insidious little device that so many find indispensable.  Our very own President on Deck, Barack Obama, may soon be suffering BlackBerry withdrawal when, as President at Bat, it is declared off limits as a national security insecurity.

Be the first on your block to get the inside scoop on what is surely the technology exposé of the season.  Read the entertaining and elucidating wit and wisdom of Gary Mazo, Martin Trautschold and Kevin Michaluk as they guide you through the nether world of abject BlackBerry addiction.  Never has such a seemingly innocuous device taken over the lives of so many innocent (and let's face it, not so innocent) and unsuspecting people.  Without ever lighting it up or sticking it up your nose, you may find yourself needing it more and more.  Fortunately, the authors have not only included tests for diagnosing your addiction, they have included what just may possibly be the cure.  Maybe you, too, can once again maintain a healthy relationship with your beloved (BlackBerry, that is.)  This book is a must read for anyone with any compact, ever present, all-in-one, communication device addiction.

Tilting touch display, QWERTY keyboard. The N97 is here.
   by  Devin on 2008/12/2 22:06:31 (1276)
One of Nokia's best kept secrets has been released to the world! The N97 is here! Tensions were high yesterday as everyone wondered what Nokia was going to release this week. With no leaks, some even doubted that they were releasing any new devices at Nokia World. I did have a few thoughts of my own, like for example I remember posting at Howard Forums that it could be a "Flagship Nseries with side slide-out QWERTY." Guess I was right. :) Thinking about, Scoble's post "Nokia’s touchiest week" was kind of a giveaway.

Phoenix Wi-Fi radio by COM ONE -- Phabulous!
   by  Jeff on 2008/12/1 20:26:01 (353)
The Phoenix Wi-Fi radio from COM ONE is more fun than a virtual barrel of monkeys. I am a radio head from way back. I listened to Celtics and Red Sox games on a crystal radio. I built a fox hole radio with a safety pin, single edged razor blade, toilet paper tube and a bunch of wire. The Phoenix radio is on the opposite extreme. This radio connects to your wireless network and plays all of your favorite online radio stations and podcasts. It includes replaceable rechargeable batteries which turn it into a portable radio.

Managing your stations is done online at www.wifi-radio.biz. There you will find a catalog of thousands of stations searchable by genre and location. The drag and drop interface on the website is pretty slick. You can also just type in the link information. The folders in which you keep your content links are easily customized. Podcasts are entered similarly. Serial podcasts are listed by date created. It can also access your music stored on your computer. Your radio is updated when you access the list of stations. There are 8 personal favorite direct access buttons.

KillZone Beta 2 Impressions
   by  Haydn on 2008/11/18 0:34:04 (617)
KillZone 2 is one of Sony's AAA titles for the PS3. It has been in development for quite some time and is planned for release early next year. They released a closed or private beta which means it is by invitation only. You can either be given one or win one in some sort of contest. Guerrilla Games (the developer) claims to have put as much work into the multiplayer of the game as they put into the single player. Has their hard work paid off or will it all be for nothing?

Nokia introduces cheaper E71 in the form of the E63
   by  Devin on 2008/11/18 0:19:44 (813)
What happens when you take the ultra successful Nokia E71 and offer it at a lower price level? You get the newly released E63 of course! The E63 joins the 5800 XpressMusic in being capable devices offered at a reasonably low MSRP. Could it be that Nokia is starting a trend here: high on features, low price? I certainly hope so. Just like the E71, the E63 sports the S60 3rd Edition Feature Pack 1. At the low 199 EUROS you do give up on some of the features.
